Sharjah to build 1,100m-high scenic mountain road to Khorfakkan’s highest peak
New project to feature trees, water canals, and hillside residences
SHARJAH: A spectacular new mountain road is coming to the emirate of Sharjah.
His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, has announced a transformative infrastructure project that will stretch across mountain peaks and connect to the coastal city of Khorfakkan.
The road will begin from the Al Ghazeer Tunnel and rise dramatically to reach Khorfakkan’s highest mountain peak – soaring 1,100 metres above sea level.
Speaking during a broadcast of the Direct Line programme, Sheikh Sultan described the development as “a wonder never seen before,” and promised an experience unlike any other in the UAE.

Scenic travel route
The route is designed not just for convenience but for pleasure. Surrounded by trees, landscaped plantations, flowing water canals, and hillside residences, the road will double as a tourist attraction – offering a tranquil winter climate and spectacular mountain vistas.
The highway will be transformed into a vibrant leisure route, serving not only motorists but also the villages scattered along the way.
Broader development plans
The project aligns with Sharjah’s broader vision to position Khorfakkan as a top cultural and eco-tourism destination. A new walkway is also in development, making the city more pedestrian-friendly for tourists exploring its coastal charm.
In July, Khorfakkan’s Faya Palaeolandscape was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list – drawing global attention to its geological and archaeological richness. The new road is expected to bolster this momentum.
Jabal Deem projects
In a related announcement, Sheikh Sultan revealed upcoming projects in Jabal Deem near Kalba, including a rest area, farms, and children’s playgrounds, scheduled to open by March 2026.
